
The USC School of Journalism and Mass Communications will host the
2011 Southeast Colloquium for the Association for Education in Journalism
and Mass Communication March 17-19 in Columbia, S.C. The Colloquium
begins Thursday, March 17, with a reception at the Hilton Columbia
Center from 5-7 p.m. The Colloquium ends Saturday, March 19, with
the business luncheon from noon-1:30 p.m.
Authors of submitted papers will be notified of the results of the
peer review process by February 1.

code CAE). The closest major airport is Charlotte
Douglas International Airport (CLT) about 90 miles away. An independent
shuttle service offers roundtrip transportation between Charlotte
Douglas International and Columbia ($49 per person, each way). More

Regional Airport (AGS, 75 miles), Charleston International Airport

Airport to downtown for about $15-$20.

Prepare your final paper and presentation
The research chair of your division will provide you with instructions
regarding the length of your presentation and how to get a copy
of your paper to your panel discussant. Each panel will be 75 minutes
and will conclude with a question-and-answer session. Computer
projection systems and wireless internet will be
available in all meeting rooms. Please bring your presentation on
a portable USB drive to load onto the
conference computers. Please bring 10 copies of your paper to share
at the Colloquium.

Columbia offers many opportunities for entertainment. The Congaree
Vista district (http://www.vistacolumbia.com/),
a vibrant redeveloped industrial region of the city, is home to shopping,
nightclubs, restaurants, and the South
Carolina State Museum. The Hilton Columbia Center is located in the
heart of the Vista and is adjacent to both the
University of South Carolina campus and the South Carolina Statehouse.

Symposium

Pulitzer Prize Winner Isabel Wilkerson to Speak
at Symposium and Southeast Colloquium

Isabel Wilkerson, author of the acclaimed book The Warmth of
Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration,
will be the keynote
speaker on Friday, March 18, 2011, for the joint luncheon of the
Media & Civil Rights History Symposium and AEJMC
Southeast Colloquium, both held at the University of South
Carolina in Columbia.
The First African American woman to win the Pulitzer
Prize in Journalism, Ms. Wilkerson has written what Toni
Morrison has called a “profound, necessary” chronicle
of
the Great Migration, the movement of millions of African
Americans from the rural South to the urban North and
West in the early twentieth century.
Ms. Wilkerson is the Director
of the Narrative
Nonfiction Program in the College of Communication at Boston University.
