Using the Camera

A how-to video by visual communications students Mike Conway and Meg Gaillard.

Do not leave the camera in your car overnight. Moisture and extreme heat or cold are all bad for the camera heads. Any moisture inside of the camera will cause the camera to malfunction.
Bring an umbrella if you think it may rain.
If your camera is not operating correctly, please do not bang on the camera to get it to work.
Do not try to remove tapes that are stuck in the camera.
When removing the camera from the carrying bag, please unzip the zippers all the way down.
When mounting the camera on the tripod, double check latch lever by pushing on it. You want to ensure the camera will not fall off the tripod. Do not over tighten knobs on tripod.
Prior to shooting, open the lens cover and check the audio switches. The first switch should always be on "1" and the input levels are always on "MIC". Power switches should be in the "48 volts" position.
Check your audio levels and make sure channels one and two are set at or below "12 DBs".
Remember, natural sound will be on channel two and voiceovers and stand-ups will be on channel one.
When shooting outside, if the sun is out, always shoot with the spot-light switch on. You can use this switch while shooting inside also. Use the eye viewing to check for hot video. There is a focus on the eyepiece that can be adjusted for your eye.
Remember to use the back light in low light situations.
Use the "zebra mode" to help with lighting a hot spot.
You can generally shoot with the camera in the automatic position.
