Allyson Bird - Internship
Diary
Nov. 23:
I was getting out of the subway in the
Capitol this morning and almost ran smack into Sen. Joe
Lieberman.
I smiled, and he said "Good morning." I felt
pretty important until I looked down at the paper in my
hand,
my reason for being in the Capitol two days before
Thanksgiving, with Congress gone: an application for
replacement credentials. Who loses their Capitol press
badge? Well, I guess I do.
But the story I finished today did make the Media
General "Day's Best" story from our 25 newspapers,
and
it was a fun one to write. I visited gift shops around
the city and wrote about what out-of-state customers
can buy online or buy phone this holiday season. In
the process, I got to check out some museums and
federal buildings I hadn't yet seen. And I got my
first non-political byline this semester.
Tomorrow I fly home for Thanksgiving. This is the
longest I've ever been away from home, so I'm looking
forward seeing how long everyone's hair has grown, how
much progress has been made on the Cooper River bridge
and how great it feels to sleep in my own bed.
