Dr. Varouhakis joined the School
of Journalism and Mass Communications in 2009 as a Visiting Assistant
Professor. Varouhakis has taught undergraduate journalism writing
and research methods courses, while in the spring of 2010 he launched
a new course focusing on reporting on the military. This year,
among others, he will be teaching public affairs reporting and
in the spring he will offer again the Media and the Military course.
Varouhakis is a media professional with a seven-year successful
career in an international media environment, while as an academic
he has several professional and peer-reviewed publications.
As a news media professional he worked as a foreign correspondent
for The Associated Press, covering among other things the Iraq War
(embedded 2003), the security of the 2004 Olympic Games, and international
politics such as the presidency of the European Union, the regional
World Economic Forum and much more. His articles, many of them breaking
stories and exclusives, were published in major market newspapers
in Europe and the U.S. He also worked as a staff reporter and assistant
editor for a daily English language newspaper in Greece, covering
defense, foreign affairs and human rights, while foreign assignments
include travel to Washington D.C. and Switzerland. The newspaper,
Kathimerini English Edition, was published jointly by the Greece’s
leading daily Kathimerini and the International Herald Tribune for
Greece and Cyprus.
In the academic field his studies employ both qualitative and quantitative
research techniques. His research interests include the use of the
Internet, newspaper coverage of local news, news coverage of religion
nationally and internationally, governmental influences on news media
content, and studies in security and intelligence. His publications
appeared in Newspaper Research Journal, Web Journal for Mass Communication
Research, Studies in Intelligence, and the International Journal
of Intelligence & Counterintelligence.
Varouhakis has done extensive work in the area of human rights,
especially with victims of torture. After conducting dozens of interviews
with torture victims from around the world he developed a field guide
and manual for interviewing victims of torture. The manual has been
published online by the Victims & the Media Program at the School
of Journalism at Michigan State University. |
