Harvie Nachlinger is an experienced broadcast news journalist who
spent over 30 years in television news and station management. During
that time he held positions as reporter, photographer, producer,
executive producer, managing editor, sports director, news director
and as a station manager at seven stations in six states from Texas
and Colorado to Ohio, Florida and South Carolina.
Nachlinger has won numerous local, state and national awards for
writing, reporting, live coverage and television newscast production.
Included in the list is the Anson Jones Awards from the Texas Medical
Association for investigation of Emergency Medical Services, a National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy for outstanding television
news writing, and an Emmy nomination for breaking news live reporting.
Having hired dozens of young people in their first jobs in television
Nachlinger now concentrates on making sure young reporters and producers
have the skills they need find their first job and to prosper and
advance in their careers. He currently teaches the Journalism 326
Broadcast Reporting courses and in the Senior Semester capstone program.
He has taught Journalism 202, Media Writing; Journalism 325, Principles
of Journalism; and Journalism 434, Advanced Reporting.
Nachlinger’s interests include study of the skills and knowledge
television news managers want new graduates to know and the future
of local broadcast news in a converged reporting universe.
In 2006, USC's Mortar Board honor society awarded Nachlinger its
Excellence in Teaching Award. He was also honored with the Kappa
Tau Alpha Top Scholar Award during 2006.
