A native of West Columbia, S.C., Hughes has worked in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications for more than 25 years.  

She assists students in all three graduate degree programs (Master of Arts, Master of Mass Communication, and Doctor of Philosophy) from recruitment to admissions, graduation and job placement.  Hughes "enjoys the satisfaction of seeing graduate students progress to a higher academic level and hearing of their successes."

Hughes maintains academic records on all graduate students in the School, advises the master's students, serves as an ex-officio member of the School's Graduate Council, and assists in the adherence to policies and procedures of the School and the USC Graduate School. She is the "go to" person for information on the graduate program in the School.

Hughes also teaches a UNIV 101 course for journalism and mass communications freshmen.

Married to Howard Hughes, they have two daughters, Susan and Lucy.  She enjoys family activities, reading and Carolina Gamecock sports.
