Jim Haney
Instructor
Advertising and Public Relations Sequence

Jim Haney's career has covered a wide range of writing and editing for the mass media. He is a former newspaper reporter and editor, corporate communications specialist and public relations practitioner.

A graduate of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Haney served as an adjunct faculty member numerous times beginning in 1977. He has taught mass media writing for advertising and public relations majors, introductory news writing and in the news-editorial practicum.

In 2006, USC's Mortar Board honor society awarded Haney its Excellence in Teaching Award. He was nominated for the award by a student in his public relations writing class.

Haney worked in public relations for Chernoff Newman of Columbia, primarily representing clients in the fiber optic technology field. Immediately before joining Chernoff Newman, he worked in corporate communications with Union Switch & Signal of Pittsburgh.

He earlier spent 22 years with daily newspapers in North and South Carolina, including The Columbia Record, The State and The Item of Sumter, holding a variety of positions from reporter to managing editor and editor. He won awards for investigative reporting and editorial writing, was president of the South Carolina AP News Council and was a member of the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Press Association.
