Chappell-Fail provides computer hardware, software, and network support for both the schools in the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies. She has been with the University since 1991 and began work at the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) in 1995.
A South Carolina native, her professional experience includes work with three South Carolina weekly newspapers: typesetting, advertising sales and sports photography for the Hampton County Guardian; freelance photography and reporting for the Bamberg Advertiser-Herald; and as editor of the Allendale County Citizen-Leader. She later worked as copywriter for a Columbia public relations firm; as graphic artist for a Columbia alternative news weekly and as editor of the Greater Columbia Business Monthly Magazine.
Chappell-Fail teaches SLIS 529, a class that focuses on Internet searching techniques, online library resources and basic Web page construction designed for Journalism undergraduates. She is an instructor for University 101, a class that provides transitional support for freshman
students during their first semester at USC. She conducts workshops for the SLIS Continuing Education program in digital photography, video editing, desktop publishing and web graphics. She has presented sessions on blogging and podcasting for the annual SC EdTech Conference in Myrtle Beach. Chappell-Fail also provides technical support for the SIPA & SCSPA conferences held at the School of Journalism.
She is married to guitarist Raymond Fail, and they are raising a grandson, Phillip. When she has spare time, Chappell-Fail enjoys traveling, photography, reading and music.
