I had been planning on studying abroad ever since I was
a senior in high school. Early in my sophomore year,
I realized that as great as Columbia is, I had to get away
from the comfort of USC and the repetition of university
life. I had to get out on my own and experience something
unique while I had the chance. That is why I chose
Australia and why I chose to go alone. Read

I studied in Newcastle, Australia for the Spring 2005 semester.
I had two weeks to find a place to live and to familiarize
myself with the campus. I flew over with someone I knew,
but after the first few days staying in a hostel, I met so
many more people, mostly Americans from the midwest, but
a few other South Carolinians as well. Read

I am an advertising major. I thought Study Abroad would be a good way to gain
a broader outlook on other cultures and what it is like to grow up in a different
country. I really enjoyed having British teachers. I now know a lot more about
British history and I got it from the British perspective. My classmates were
from many different countries and it was interesting to see how humor is universal.
Laura Stribling, advertising major
London, Summer 2005
Studying abroad was one of the greatest decisions of my life. Italy (and all
my other travels while there) provided me such an insight to life outside of
the U.S. and outside of my comfort zone. Not only did I get to learn a new language
but I was exposed to situations and tested in ways I could have never dreamed...
all which have changed me for the better and enlightened me in ways that only
truly unique experiences can.
Betsy Heckert, public relations major
Italy, Spring 2005
Studying in London, England was an incredible experience. My communications classes
were filled with students from around the world, they each brought different
perspectives to the discussions and gave me a chance to learn more about how
other cultures viewed the media.
Karla Hoppmann, public relations major
London, Spring 2005
The most valuable aspect/quality that I gained through my Study Abroad experience
in Italy was my independence! I learned how to fend for myself in some of the
most opportune times, I learned how to better appreciate all that my parents
provide for me as their child. I gained a better sense of who I am as a person
and how exciting living on your own in another country can be. But the most memorable
aspect was the fact that I planned as well as executed all that I wanted to while
living in Europe.
