William C. Bochman Memorial Scholarship
Established by the family of William C. Bochman, a South Carolina broadcaster and former president of the South Carolina Broadcaster’s Association.

Deanna K. Boland Memorial Scholarship
Established by family and friends of Deanna Boland upon her accidental death in 1990. Ms. Boland was a 1985 broadcast journalism graduate from Easley, South Carolina.

George A. Buchanan Scholarship
Honors a distinguished former newspaper editor and former dean of the School of Journalism (1955-65).

Budweiser of Columbia, Inc. Scholarship
Established to assist advertising and public relations majors from South Carolina who have demonstrated excellent written and verbal skills.

Louis Welborn Cassels Scholarship
Established by family and friends of Louis W. Cassels. One of South Carolina’s most beloved and respected newspapermen, he was a senior editor for United Press International best known for his national reporting, columns, and books on religion and ethics.

John K. Cauthen Scholarship
Established by the family of John K. Cauthen as a memorial to him. Mr. Cauthen was a distinguished South Carolinian who was active in newspapering and public relations. He was also the chairman of the South Carolina ETV Commission for many years.

Columbia Advertising Club Clyde Ellisor Scholarship
Awarded to a resident of South Carolina who is a rising senior majoring in the Advertising and Public Relations Sequence. Named after a former president of the Columbia Ad Club.

Columbia Advertising Club Albert Scroggins Scholarship
Awarded to a rising junior or senior majoring in the Advertising and Public Relations Sequence and is named after a former dean of the College.

Lee J. Dudek Broadcast Scholarship
Established in 1990 upon Dr. Dudek’s retirement to honor his 23 years in broadcast education at the University of South Carolina.

Ben J. Grant Scholarship
Established by the late Mr. Grant, who retired in 1975, to assist students majoring in journalism/communications. Mr. Grant’s career in journalism spanned more than 43 years and included 29 years with U.S. News and World Report where he served as managing editor from 1967 to 1970.

Greenville News Scholarship
Established to honor a full-time print student with a 3.0 GPA or better, at least 40 hours of credit but no more than 100 hours of credit by the end of the Spring semester and planning to return for at least two semesters after the scholarship is awarded.

The Chris Gulfman Scholarship for Electronic Journalism
Awarded annually by WYFF-TV to a junior or senior majoring in electronic journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Must be a resident in one of the 10 upstate South Carolina Counties included in the WYFF-TV coverage area.

Mark Timothy Hedgecoth Scholarship
Established in memory of Tim Hedgecoth, a journalism major who was killed in an accident during his sophomore year.

Rocky D. Harwood Scholarship
Established by Rocky Harwood, a 1970 alumnus, this scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman or undergraduate student with at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to students with permanent residence in North Carolina.

Jacobs-Daughtry Continuing Education Scholarship
Established by the family of Sylvia Daughtry.

Samuel L. Latimer, Sr. and Sallie Belle Witherspoon Latimer Scholarship
Established by the late Samuel L. Latimer, Jr. in memory of his parents. Mr. Latimer, Jr. was a highly respected former editor of The State, and a former president of the South Carolina Press Association. Awarded to outstanding journalism students who are residents of York or Richland County.

Saul Lavisky Scholarship
Awarded in memory of a distinguished alumnus and public affairs professional to outstanding students in the Advertising and Public Relations Sequence.

Kathryn Linwood Scholarship
This scholarship, honoring a former Miami Herald reporter, is awarded to a sophomore or junior majoring in print journalism.

Melanie Byer

Jim McAllister Scholarship
The Jim McAllister Scholarship was established as a memorial by friends of Mr. McAllister to recognize his outstanding contributions to the newspaper field and to assist journalism news-editorial students from Greenville County (SC). Mr. McAllister was a popular columnist for twelve years with the Greenville News. He died in 1984.

McClatchy Minority Scholarship
Established by The McClatchy Company newspapers with participation by The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.; The Island Packet in Hilton Head, S.C.; The Gazette in Beaufort, S.C.; and The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C., this scholarship/fellowship is awarded to minority students pursuing careers in print journalism.

J. Rion McKissick Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Carolina McKissick Dial in memory of her late husband. Mr. McKissick was a newspaper editor, dean of the School of Journalism (1927-1936) and president of the University. The McKissick scholarships are awarded to rising sophomores who have demonstrated high academic standards and a desire to take part in journalism related extracurricular activities.

Morris Midkiff Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Mr. Midkiff, a professor in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications from 1987-89, to recognize his achievements in and contributions to public relations and advertising as both a professional and educator.

Mickey Rogers Broadcast Journalism Scholarship
Established in memory of Miss Mickey Rogers, a 1954 journalism graduate, this scholarship is provided for deserving students in the field of broadcasting.

Established in honor of Dr. Russell’s service to the public relations field as a professional and an educator. Before retiring in 1985, he was on the College of Journalism and Mass Communications faculty for six years.

Established by the sons of Mr. Rutledge to honor their father. Mr. Rutledge was a 1929 School of Journalism graduate who was active in Sigma Delta Chi and on The Gamecock staff.

This scholarship is awarded to a student in memory of Mr. Seal, recognizing his public and professional service to the government and the media of South Carolina.

South Carolina Cable Television Scholarship
This four-year scholarship is awarded to students from South Carolina majoring in journalism and mass communications. The scholarship funds are provided by the South Carolina Cable Television Association.

South Carolina Public Relations Society of America Scholarship
Awarded to a student in good standing who is a member of SCPRSSA and is involved in community activities.

Awarded to outstanding news-editorial students.

Frank Sutherland Scholarship
Mr. Sutherland established this scholarship in 1990 for University of South Carolina Journalism majors after visiting the campus as the featured speaker at the USC student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists banquet. He is the former editor of The Tennessean in Nashville.

Rick Temple Scholarship
Established in honor of a Master of Mass Communications graduate in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Mr. Temple is presently a South Carolina journalist.

National Motorsport Press Association Joseph Whitlock Memorial Scholarship
Established by the family and friends of Joseph Whitlock, a noted sports writer and graduate of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Anne Searson Holmes Scholarship
Established by the family of Anne Searson Holmes and awarded to a woman from SC whom is a print major.

The Jon P. Wardrip Scholarship
Established by alumni and friends of Jon P. Wardrip. Dr. Wardrip was a former public relations professor of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. This scholarship is awarded to worthy students enrolled in the AD/PR sequence and participating in the Maymester New York program.
