SJMC
students network with professionals at Career Fair
The School of Journalism and Mass Communications held
its spring Career Fair on March 1. More than 170
students interviewed for
internships and jobs with 53 companies from North
Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Recruiters spoke with
students about a variety of opportunities including newspaper
internships, sales/marketing positions, broadcast news
internships, and advertising/sales positions.
Participant post-fair evaluations deemed the event a success.
Recruiters complimented students on dress, professional
demeanor and portfolios. One recruiter said, “Great
candidates, well prepared. Overall very organized and effective.” Another
recruiter said, “Do your students know how lucky they
are to have such an event to help them promote themselves?
I sure hope so. “
Students also had positive comments about the Fair and recruiters.
One student said, “My first Career Fair and I’m
glad I came. I feel much better prepared now to interview.” Another
student said, “I enjoyed talking to the people I was
scheduled with and also those who were not on the schedule.
Great opportunities. Thank you.” Another commented, “I
think the variety of companies at the Career Fair was excellent.”
A panel discussion moderated by professor Karen Mallia was
held at noon in the Frank McGuire Room in the Athletic Practice
Facility. The topic was: "Media
Next: How massive changes in media companies, news delivery
and information consumption will affect the industry's future." USC
graduate David Mullen, senior account executive with Mullen
in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Thomas Peyton, director of visuals
for The State, headlined the panel.
