All in a day’s work
USC broadcast instructors teach students about the world of daily deadlines

By Page Ivey
USC Times

USC broadcast students will find a job after graduation thanks in large part to a trio of broadcast instructors who have a combined 95 years of experience in television news.

Each has spent the better part of his career honing his craft, meeting daily production deadlines, managing newsrooms and making connections. Each has the voice of an old-school broadcaster/anchor that makes you stop in your tracks to listen to what they have to say.

Those skills and connections are what they use to place every one of USC’s broadcast graduates who want to work in the news business.

Instructors“Our goal is to prepare students for a career in local television news,” said Rick Peterson, an instructor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and co-director of the daily news show “Carolina News” staffed by seniors in the electronic journalism track.

It is that daily deadline experience, Peterson and other instructors say, that is the key to getting South Carolina graduates jobs.

“The hardest thing for a newly graduated journalist to do is to get up to speed on deadlines,” instructor Harvie Nachlinger said.

Nachlinger worked at stations from Texas to Colorado, Ohio, Florida and South Carolina in his 30-year news career before joining USC. “I decided that what I really liked doing was dealing with young reporters,” he said.

USC’s daily student-led broadcast is unique among journalism schools, many of which may go on air just once a week. “There is a big difference between a four-day deadline and a four-hour deadline,” Nachlinger said.

Peterson, who joined USC in 1997, still does freelance broadcast stories for the NBC News Channel based in Charlotte, N.C. He has been a television reporter, anchor and producer.

Peterson points to Dick Moore as another reason why USC’s broadcast graduates find work after graduation.

Moore came to USC in 2006 after 35 years in television news – much of it on the corporate and news management side.

“It’s been the fulfillment of a longstanding ambition to bring my career in the media to a close in academics,” Moore said.

Peterson says Moore’s depth of experience and extensive network of contacts, particularly in the Southeast, is visible in how the university contacts recruiters.

“Before Dick came here, we were sending out letters,” Peterson said. “Now, he calls them because he knows them personally.”

The connections are not lost on students, who hope to tap into that network to find jobs after graduation.

“Beyond the classroom, I know Dick, Rick and Harvie will be not only professional references but also peers in the field of journalism,” said Lauren Hinnant, a senior broadcast journalism major from Anderson, S.C., who plans to graduate in December with a minor in political science. “We are so lucky to have faculty like them at Carolina.”
