09 Addy Winners

SJMC students win top awards from American Advertising Federation of Midlands

Eleven journalism students were honored for their creative and design work at the American Advertising Federation of the Midlands ADDY Awards on March 14.

The students won fifteen individual ADDY awards in the competition, including seven Student Gold ADDY awards.

Aidan Zanders, a visual-communications major from Irmo, won three Student Gold ADDY awards for editorial spreads in the Garnet & Black magazine. Two awards were for “Fantastic,” featured in the October 2008 issue, and one was for “A Model Student,” which appeared in the Holiday 2008 issue. See layouts>

Broadcast journalism majors Corey Burkarth of Richmond, Va., and Brian Walker, of Lawrenceville, Ga., each won a Student Gold ADDY award for their collaborative work on a 60-second commercial promoting Capital City Sports. The ad was shown on SGTV (student government television).

Advertising major Sammy Rutkowski won three awards. She won a Gold ADDY and a Special Judges' Award (Killer Non-traditional Advertising) for a Noxzema ad "Wash your face".

Sammy also won a Silver ADDY in the same Mixed Media Campaign category for "Until you need it - U'Store'It." Sammy is from Spartanburg, S.C.

for broadcast majors Corey Burkarth and Brian Walker.


 

Dana Smith, an advertising major from Goose Creek, S.C., won two ADDYs in the Non-Traditional Advertising category. He won a Gold for a Noxzema ad created for class and a Silver for "Cranergy." See his ads>

Amanda Croy, a visual communications major from Marietta, Ga., also won a Gold and a Silver ADDY. She won a Gold in the Illustration category and a Silver in the Single Consumer/Trade Magazine division. See her winning entries>

Elizabeth Howell, a visual-communications major from Lexington, won a Student Silver ADDY award for her “Blitz 2008” editorial series featured in The Daily Gamecock. See series>

Meredith Ray, a visual-communications major from Charleston, won a Student Silver ADDY award for her “100 Years Later” editorial cover design featured in The Daily Gamecock. See cover design>

Megan Sinclair, a visual-communications major from Clover, won a Student Silver ADDY award for “Lipstick Jungle,” which featured university alumna and Survivor contestant Jamie Dugan on the cover design for the February 2009 issue of Garnet & Black magazine. See design>

Rachel Cope, an advertising major, won a Silver ADDY in the Mixed Media Campaign division.

Conducted annually by the AAF, the local ADDY contest is the first of a three-tiered, national competition to recognize and reward creative excellence in the art of advertising. Local gold winners are eligible for the district-level ADDY competition.
