Students honored at the 2005 Honors and Awards Night Ceremony

On April 13, as I-Comm Week came to an end, The School of Journalism and Mass Communications held its annual Honor and Awards Night celebration. Students, faculty, family, and friends gathered in the Law School Auditorium to recognize the academic achievements of the School’s best and brightest students. Dr. Shirley Staples Carter, director of the School, presented the awards. Dean Charles Bierbauer delivered the keynote address.

Awards were presented to outstanding seniors in the advertising and public relations sequence, the print and electronic journalism sequence and the new visual communications sequence.

Deanna K. Boland Memorial Scholarship
Established by family and friends of Deanna Boland upon her accidental death in 1990. Ms. Boland was a 1985 broadcast journalism graduate from Easley, South Carolina.

George A. Buchanan Scholarship
Honors a distinguished former newspaper editor and former dean of the School of Journalism (1955-65). Awarded to an outstanding student in the Electronic and Print Sequence.

Louis Welborn Cassels Memorial Fund Scholarship
Established by family and friends of Louis W. Cassels. One of South Carolina’s most beloved and respected newspapermen, he was a senior editor for United Press International best known for his national reporting, columns, and books on religion and ethics. Awarded to an outstanding student in the Electronic and Print Journalism Sequence.
Recipient: Paul Koska

John K. Cauthen Scholarship
Awarded to outstanding students from South Carolina. Established by the family of John K. Cauthen as a memorial to him. Mr. Cauthen was a distinguished South Carolinian who was active in newspapering and public relations. He was also the chairman of the South Carolina ETV Commission for many years.

Charleston Post & Courier Scholarship
Established to encourage minority students to pursue education and careers in print journalism. Recipients work for the Charleston Post & Courier upon graduation.

Lee J. Dudek Broadcast Scholarship
Established in 1990 upon Dr. Dudek’s retirement to honor his 23 years in broadcast education at the University of South Carolina. Awarded to electronic majors.

Ben J. Grant Scholarship
Established by the late Mr. Grant, who retired in 1975, to assist students majoring in journalism/communications. Mr. Grant’s career in journalism spanned more than 43 years and included 29 years with U.S. News and World Report where he served as managing editor from 1967 to 1970.

Mark Timothy Hedgecoth Scholarship
Established in memory of Tim Hedgecoth, a journalism major who was killed in an accident during his sophomore year. Awarded to a student in the Electronic and Print Sequence.

Rocky D. Harwood Scholarship
Established by Rocky Harwood, a 1970 alumnus, this scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman or undergraduate student with at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to students with permanent residence in North Carolina.

Sig and Judy Huitt Scholarship
Established by Sig Huitt, president of Carolina Public Relations, and his wife Judy, this scholarship is awarded based on merit to an incoming student with preference given to a student in the public relations sequence.

Samuel L. Latimer, Sr. and Sallie Belle Witherspoon Latimer Scholarship
Established by the late Samuel L. Latimer, Jr. in memory of his parents. Mr. Latimer, Jr. was a highly respected former editor of The State, and a former president of the South Carolina Press Association. Awarded to outstanding students in the Electronic and Print Journalism Sequence who are residents of York or Richland County.

Saul Lavisky Scholarship
Awarded in memory of a distinguished alumnus and public affairs professional to outstanding students in the Advertising and Public Relations Sequence.

Jim McAllister Scholarship
The Jim McAllister Scholarship was established as a memorial by friends of Mr. McAllister to recognize his outstanding contributions to the newspaper field and to assist journalism news-editorial students from Greenville County (SC). Mr. McAllister was a popular columnist for twelve years with the Greenville News. He died in 1984.

McClatchy Minority Scholarship
Established by The McClatchy Company newspapers with participation by The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.; The Island Packet in Hilton Head, S.C.; The Gazette in Beaufort, S.C.; and The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C., this scholarship/fellowship is awarded to minority students pursuing careers in print journalism.

J. Rion McKissick Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Carolina McKissick Dial in memory of her late husband. Mr. McKissick was a newspaper editor, dean of the School of Journalism (1927-1936) and president of the University. The McKissick scholarships are awarded to rising sophomores who have demonstrated high academic standards and a desire to take part in journalism related extracurricular activities.

Mickey Rogers Broadcast Journalism Scholarship
Established in memory of Miss Mickey Rogers, a 1954 journalism graduate, this scholarship is provided for deserving students in the field of broadcasting.

Established in memory of Mr. Midkiff, a professor in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications from 1987-89, to recognize his achievements in and contributions to public relations and advertising as both a professional and educator. Awarded to an advertising and public relations major.

Edmund A. Ramsaur Scholarship
Established by the family of Mr. Ramsaur, who for many years was a key executive with the Greenville News and Greenville Piedmont, and Multimedia, Inc. in Greenville, S.C. Awarded to rising juniors and/or seniors who intend to pursue careers in writing.

Jesse A. Rutledge Scholarship
Established by the sons of Mr. Rutledge to honor their father. Mr. Rutledge was a 1929 School of Journalism graduate who was active in Sigma Delta Chi and on the Gamecock staff. Awarded to a rising sophomore majoring in news-editorial or public relations.

Col. C.E. (Chuck) Savedge Scholarship
Established in memory of Col. Savedge, an important figure in scholastic journalism and deeply involved with SIPA. Awarded to an outstanding high school senior who is a member of the yearbook staff. The recipient’s yearbook must hold membership in SIPA.

This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in broadcasting in memory of Mr. Seal, recognizing his public and professional service to the government and the media of South Carolina.

Kathryn and Louis Sossamon
Established by the Sossamons, who own and publish the Gaffney Ledger, this scholarship is awarded to a journalism school student who graduated from a Cherokee County high school.

South Carolina Cable Television Scholarship
This four-year scholarship is awarded to students from South Carolina majoring in journalism and mass communications. The scholarship funds are provided by the South Carolina Cable Television Foundation.

South Carolina Public Relations Society of America Scholarship
Awarded to a student in good standing who is a member of SCPRSSA and is involved in community activities.

Frank Sutherland Scholarship
Mr. Sutherland established this scholarship in 1990 for University of South Carolina Journalism majors after visiting the campus as the featured speaker at the USC student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists banquet. He is the former editor of The Tennessean in Nashville.
