USC
to hold SPJ Region 3 Conference
Journalism students, professionals and educators will gather
at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications Friday
and Saturday, March 28-29, for the Society of Professional
Journalists Region 3 Spring Conference.
The conference will feature lectures and seminars over
the course of the two days in the Coliseum and at the Courtyard
by Marriott on Assembly. A short-course on new media writing
will be held at IFRA
Newsplex. See full schedule>
Professors and professionals in journalism from around the
country will present seminars on topics including challenges
and preparation for new and future media, community involvement
in newspapers, vigilante journalism and lessons from Jena,
La., as well as many other important topics of relevance
to the journalism field.
"Each of SPJ's 12 regions holds a professional conference
in the spring to allow working journalists and students in
those regions a chance to develop their skills in workshops
and to network," said Professor Ernest Wiggins, adviser
to the SPJ USC chapter. "It is also during the spring
conferences that outstanding student work is recognized during
the Mark of Excellence Awards luncheon. We will be doing
that on Saturday."
According to Wiggins, Region 3 is made up of South Carolina,
Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
The event is open to the public. Registration is $75 for
the entire event. Students from SJMC may attend any of Friday's
events free of charge, and the program Saturday is $35, which
includes lunch and materials for the conference.
Wiggins said they expect more than 50 students and journalism
professionals to attend the conference.
