Dominick networks with industry professionals at NABJ Convention
Internship and Placement Coordinator Beverly Dominick represented the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the National Association of Black Journalists Conference held August 8 - 12, in Las Vegas. She spent time meeting with executives about internships and jobs for SJMC students and attending workshops. She also connected with old industry friends.
Workshops were held for new and veteran journalists dealing with the hot topics in the industry that included “Now What? A Frank Discussion About Major Transitions for Veteran Journalists” to “Out of the Gate: Surviving the First Five Years of Journalism.”
Pre-conference seminars were held on August 8 that included sessions on convergence sponsored by The Tampa Tribune; a multimedia learning lab sponsored by the Knight New Media Center at UC-Berkeley’s graduate school of journalism and the NABJ visual task force; and an Adobe Flash learning lab.
Political candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama also spoke to the attendees about their presidential campaigns.
More than 150 companies attended the Career Fair along with a number of journalism schools. Many employers were not hiring as a reflection of current industry woes but were on the lookout for new talent for when hiring budgets get better. It was easy to distinguish print from broadcast journalists from the well-heeled attire and perfect make-up to the lines at the CBS and NBC booths viewing of resume tapes. The Career Fair is always a great place to reconnect with old friends and make new networking connections. |
