Jon Wardrip
has left us and left us with a lot to remember. When
he’d drop by my office to chat,
I could expect an idea or two and a couple of laughs.
Despite his prolonged illness, during which his spirit
rarely flagged, he’d e-mail suggestions and nudge
us along to ensure that the journalism school events
that he loved so much—alumni honors, convocation,
Hallowiener—were not neglected in his absence.
Jon created the Maymester trip to New York that exposed
USC students to top advertising and public relations
executives—including our alumni. I cribbed gratefully
from his ingenuity to create a Maymester course on
media and government in Washington.
We hope to perpetuate Jon’s course and celebrate
his role here. On this site are our thoughts
about his contribution to the School of Journalism
and Mass Communications. |

To honor and recognize Jon Wardrip’s nearly 20-year
contribution to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications,
an endowed scholarship has been created in his name.
The scholarship will benefit students participating in the
unique Maymester in New York course that he developed and
led for more than a decade. We intend to perpetuate this
experience for advertising and public relations students.
The fund will enable deserving students to defray the cost
of participating.
We met and exceeded our goal to raise the endowment threshold
of $25,000 by the end of 2005, thanks to all of the alumni,
corporations, faculty, staff and friends that contributed
so generously to this scholarship.
The School is still accepting donations to this scholarship.
If you would like to contribute, please contact Elaine Taylor
at 803.777.7118 or etaylor@sc.edu.
