The
Carter Questions
The following questions were submitted by our Web readers.
Bill
Rogers, Executive Director of the South Carolina Press Association
Rogers: How do you see the J-School dealing
with the training needs of S.C. daily and weekly newspapers
in the decade ahead?
Carter: I see the School of Journalism
and Mass Communications will continue its role as a leader
in journalism education and meeting the needs of South Carolina
daily and weekly newspapers. We will continue to emphasize
the traditional skills in writing and editing and enhance
those with instruction in writing across multiple media platforms.
We also will expand our offerings in support of professional
development for newspaper professionals through our distance
education and continuing education programs.
Rogers: Will the Newsplex lab have an
impact on newspapers in South Carolina?
Carter: The Newsplex lab should have a dual
impact on newspapers in South Carolina through its training
of undergraduate students and industry professionals as well.
It is to our advantage to have a convergence laboratory such
as Newsplex as part of the College.
Rogers: What is the biggest challenge the School
faces in training tomorrow's journalists?
Carter: I think the biggest challenge
the School faces in training tomorrow's journalists is ensuring
that we continue to provide a quality education for all of
our students in the face of dwindling financial resources
to support higher education in general. |
