The first I-Comm
Week at the College is history and students, faculty and
the professional community are calling it a resounding success.
During the week of March 31-April 2, students in the College
had an opportunity to hear and interact with Rita Cosby, the
Fox News Channel correspondent; Bill Douglas, White House
correspondent for Knight Ridder; and Gerald Boyd, former managing
editor of The New York Times. Both Cosby and Douglas are USC
alums.
Boyd's lecture was the high point of the School of Journalism's
annual Honors Night. He spoke at length about the Jayson Blair
affair, which led to Boyd's departure from The Times. His
lecture was made possible by the Buchheit Family Endowment.
Cosby's lecture was made possible by an endowment created
by the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.
Other highlights of the week included:
A panel on Super Bowl advertising with Ed Wax, the former
CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi; USC alum Woody Hinkle of Nasuti
& Hinkle in Silver Springs, MD; Greg Larson of Martin/Williams
in Minneapolis and Alexis Denicke, creative director for Staples.
A career fair that allowed students to get advice from top
professionals in the state and beyond.
The School of Library and Information Science Deans' Lecture
by University of Pittsburgh Professor Emeritus Stephen Almagno,
an expert on information ethics.
The week concluded with a cross-disciplinary panel, which
debated ethics in contemporary society. Dean Charles Bierbauer
moderated the wide-ranging discussion among representatives
of law, business, medicine, religion, African-American studies,
library science and journalism.
I-Comm Week was conceived by Shirley Carter, Director of
the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, reflecting
Dean Bierbauer's priority of better connecting the College
with the professional communities it serves. |
