 Beth
Dickey honored by the National Scholastic Press Association
Beth Dickey was awarded the National Scholastic Press Association
Recognition Award for National Service to Scholastic Journalism
at the Southern Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA)
banquet March 4, 2006.
Charles Bierbauer, dean of the
College of Mass Communications and Information Studies,
presented Dickey with a plaque from the NSPA and read
the following comments:
It is with pleasure and with deep respect for your service
to journalism students and teachers that we present you, on
the behalf of the members of the National Scholastic Press
Association, a token of our appreciation for this service,
the NSPA Recognition Award for National Service to Scholastic
Journalism.
During your more than 30 years of service to students
and teachers alike in South Carolina, the Southeast, Southwest
and Middle Atlantic states and throughout the entire country,
you have exemplified the kind of leadership that others
aspire to duplicate, but few manage to attain. Through
your work, you have helped the schools in your region become
many of the best student publications in the country. Many
of the teachers you have worked with have become regional
and national leaders in scholastic journalism. Your work
and influence are far reaching. Scholastic journalism has
also benefited from your interest in and work for student
free expression rights and the Student Press Law Center.
I am confident that I join with thousands of students
and teachers everywhere in commending you for your achievements
and saying "thank you" for all that you have done so others
can shine.
We wish you success in your life and work ahead, and know
that scholastic journalism will remain a part of your life
in some form.
Best regards,
