Speak Out
Jessica Peters
Outstanding Public Relations Senior
Dr.
Tom Klipstine on Jessica's strengths and skills:
I have known Jessica for three years as both a student and as a leader
in our student chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. As
a student Jessica has been a delight to work with and she is a student
who really understands public relations as a profession and Jessica has
continually demonstrated the knowledge and leadership skills that the
profession requires.
As an active leader in PRSSA for three years, Jessica has participated
in various professional activities at the state and national level and
attended two national PRSSA and PRSA conventions representing USC. It
has been through her leadership that both our student organizations have
grown tremendously and today boasts a combined membership of over 130
students.
While I realize that Jessica has chosen a somewhat different career
path and is off to law school, I know her background in public relations
and her time at USC will always be an asset for her.
Jessica
Speaks Out:
Why did you choose USC?
I knew I wanted to attend a large university in the (warm) South, and after one visit I was in love with the place. When I was offered a scholarship, I couldn't resist.
Why public relations?
I started off as a broadcast journalism major, but switched to PR after my first semester because I couldn't see myself working nights and weekends at a TV station. I found that PR encompassed all of my interests in the communications field and offered a lot of diverse career options.
Favorite/most beneficial class?
My favorite class was Dr. Collins' Law and Ethics of Mass Media. From
day one, we learned to worship the First Amendment, act so that others
don't question your ethical fiber and that A's are not made, but earned.
What will you miss most about college?
I will certainly miss the college lifestyle. At times it can be hectic with exams, activities, sports and trying to make time for friends, but it truly has been the best time of my life. I'll miss the freedom and comfort in knowing I'm in a safe, pressure-free point in my life.
And you won't miss?
Bluebooks! And of course, the parking situation.
What are you really passionate about?
I'm most passionate about two things, people and politics. Both are intriguing, complex and inspire me to make a difference.
Has there been a "defining moment" or
significant event in your college experience?
Each semester I've watched myself grow up a little bit and become more independent. The most defining moment is when I realized that I could do anything I want to with my life, I just have to put in the effort. As USC students, we've been given the tools and education to be successful anywhere. The college years are about finding out who you are and what impact you want to make, then using what you've been given to make it happen.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
I've chosen the dark side and will be attending law school here at Carolina. Though the student loans and Socratic method of teaching (thank you Dr. Collins) are certainly intimidating, at least I'll be a Gamecock for three more years! It is my hope to end up lobbying in Washington, using my communications and law degree to help shape legislation and information policy.
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for other
students in your major?
The time flies, so take advantage of the limitless opportunities you have as a student at Carolina. Do internships, they give you experience and WILL help you get a job. Study abroad if at all possible, the world is smaller than you think and international experience is invaluable for your career. Be involved, because when else in your life will you be exposed to so many different activities, organizations and resources?
Any parting words or something you'd like to say
to your SJMC family, or anyone else, before you head out the
door?
I would love the opportunity to thank the people who have made a profound impact on my college experience and my future, namely Dr. Erik Collins for igniting my interest in law, Dr. Don Fowler for introducing me to the volatile world of politics, Dr. Tom Klipstine for always keeping me honest and Lisa Sisk for reminding me why I love PR and the people who practice it.
