Honors and Awards Night
A celebration of achievement
 The
sometimes sleepy, occasionally stressed classroom faces are
bright and smiling. The jeans and flip flops are replaced--mostly--by
dresses and even heels or coats and ties. It must be Honors & Awards
Night for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Plaques, certificates and honors cords replace syllabi, term
papers and portfolios. Lectures are succeeded by professors'
words of praise. The jobs done well in college lead to jobs
that will reward in the work place. Or so all hope.
The photos, awards and personal stories here reflect a mere
fraction of the effort the school's leading students invested
over their four, or so, years on campus.
In the Law School auditorium on Thursday, April 17, the
school recognized its students' academic achievements, presenting
awards to outstanding seniors in the advertising and public
relations sequence, the print and electronic journalism sequence,
the visual communications sequence, as well as the graduate
program.
On the professional side, the 2008 Taylor/Tomlin Award for
Investigative Journalism, administered by the school, was
awarded for two provocative investigative journalism series
by The Post and Courier of Charleston. The paper's commitment
to public service resulted in changes to city and state policies
after the reports shed light on why nine firefighters lost
their lives in June 2007 in the Sofa Super Store fire and
how the condition of the state-owned school bus fleet endangered
the lives of South Carolina school children. Read
