Outstanding Senior in Advertising
Danielle
has collected numerous accolades during her studies at USC,
including national recognition from the American Advertising
Federation. She has received awards for academic excellence
from USC's
Office of Multicultural Student Affairs for four consecutive
years.
Professor Bonnie Drewniany
on Danielle's work ethic and scholastic achievements:
Danielle was a top student in my Creative Strategy in Advertising
class, was one of two students who did an optional assignment
for the Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Association competition, and
her entry earned her second place in the region. She has an
excellent academic record and consistently gives 110 percent
to her classes. See Danielle's

In addition to her school work, Danielle works 30-40 hours
per week as a customer service representative for Knight Ridder,
where she resolves 200-250 complaints per day. Despite her
hectic workload, Danielle finds the time to give back to the
community, serving as chairperson of USC's NAACP Voter Empowerment
Committee, and as a mentor with Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
In February she was one of 34 students in the nation named
to the American Advertising Federation's Most Promising Honor
Roll.
Danielle Speaks
Out:
Why did you choose USC?
I chose USC because I wanted to stay in-state, and it
was affordable. Also, I had heard very good things about
the Journalism School.
Why advertising?
I always knew that I wanted a career in communications.
After taking JOUR 201 (Survey of Mass Comm.), I decided
to do more research into the advertising field. I also love
writing, so majoring in advertising was the best way to
utilize all my talents and interests.
Favorite/most beneficial class?
JOUR 545, Advertising Campaigns, made me realize just
how much I had learned in all my other classes. It also
gave me a good idea of what it would be like to put together
an actual ad campaign.
What will you miss most about college?
I will miss all the wonderful and different people that
I got the opportunity to spend time with.
And you won't miss?
Tests, projects, and homework.
What are you really passionate about?
I am extremely passionate about volunteering, and making
myself of service to my community. I feel that it is everyone's
responsibility to give back to those who are less fortunate
and to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Has there been a "defining moment" or
significant event in your college experience?
Every experience that I've had, good and bad, has helped
me to grow and become a better person, so I can't say that
one has been more significant than another.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
I have recently accepted a position at The State
newspaper as a junior account executive in the advertising
department.
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for other
students in your major?
No matter how cliche it may sound, hard work really does
pay off.
Any parting words or something you'd like to say
to your SJMC family, or anyone else, before you head out the
door?
I would just like to thank everyone in the SJMC family
for helping to make it this far. I would especially like
to thank Professor Bonnie Drewniany and Dr. Shirley Staples
Carter for allowing me the opportunity to travel to New
York. I will never forget your kindness and generosity.
