Speak Out
Erin Nelson
Outstanding Senior in Public Relations Dr.
Tom Klipstine on Erin's strengths and skills:
Erin is truly one of those students who simply gets it when
it comes to public relations. As a public relations major,
she has demonstrated a good working knowledge of the basic
skills needed for success.
She is a recipient of the Caroliniana Award and served as
vice president of the University's Public Relations Student
Society of America. In 2004, Erin was named South Carolina's
PRSSA outstanding junior and received the Mike Witkoski memorial
scholarship for outstanding achievement.
She has not only excelled academically but has also been
involved with various student and professional activities
where she has demonstrated her ability to be effective in
the field of public relations. With her participation in the
Bateman competition and as an officer with PRSSA, Erin has
been an outstanding student and an asset to our program.
Erin
Speaks Out:
Why did you choose USC?
I always wanted to go far from home for college, and growing
up in North Dakota made southern weather very appealing.
Ultimately, however, it was the strong communications program
at USC that made my decision.
Why public relations?
I wanted to learn to build relationships with people to
change public opinion and shape a company’s image.
Favorite/most beneficial class?
As a member of the 2004 Bateman team I learned first hand
the hard work required when putting together a public relations
campaign. It was a chance for me to implement everything
I learned in the classroom and walk away with something
tangible to show prospective employers. The Bateman experience
gave me a glimpse into the world of public relations and
got me excited about a career after graduation.
What will you miss most about college?
No class on Friday.
And you won't miss?
I will not miss the stress of making time for class, work,
extra curricular activities and friends.
What are you really passionate about?
I work hard to stay close with my family even though we
are far apart and don't get to see each other as often as
we would like. The limited amount of time we are able to
spend together is very precious to me.
Has there been a "defining moment" or
significant event in your college experience?
A large part of my positive experience here has been the
time I have spent as a University Ambassador working for
the Visitor Center. Being a University Ambassador has given
me confidence and motivation towards a career in public
relations. I have made life-long friends and mentors and
have had a ton of fun. Being a University Ambassador has
helped me in so many areas and will no doubt continue to
help me long after graduation.
(Erin was one of two students selected to speak at USC's
Guardian Society luncheon in Feb. 2005. Her comments and
demeanor were praised by many who attended the event.

What do you hope to do after graduation?
I will be working for The Palladian Group, a Public Relations/Marketing
agency in Spartanburg, SC.
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for other
students in your major?
Get involved! Simply having a degree in communications
is no longer enough. You must get involved in activities
and organizations to gain experience. It is very competitive
after graduation, and the more experience and skills you
have to set you apart, the better.
Any parting words or something you'd like to say
to your SJMC family, or anyone else, before you head out the
door?
College is an emotional roller-coaster, I promise you
that! But remember what is truly important and prioritize
your life accordingly. Live your years at USC in a way that
one day when you are looking back, you look back with a
smile and no regrets.
