Seniors awarded top honors
Seven students received outstanding senior honors at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications 2005 Honors and Awards Night on April 13. Faculty selected the seniors for the awards.

The School gave each of the seniors an opportunity to speak freely about their college experience, their passions and their future plans. Read their comments, and view some of their recent work by visiting the links below:

Adam Beam — The J. Rion McKissick Award for print journalism
Jessica Boulware — Outstanding Visual Communications Senior
Justin Chappell — George Buchanan Award for print journalism
Erin Colgan — Outstanding Electronic Journalism Senior for Leadership
Erin Nelson — Outstanding Senior in Public Relations
Danielle Washington — Outstanding Senior in Advertising
Karen Zatkulak — Outstanding Electronic Journalism Senior for Reporting

Dr. Shirley Staples Carter, director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, said she was proud of all the seniors' accomplishments:

"Each of our seven outstanding seniors represents the best and brightest in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, College of Mass Communications and Information Studies and the University of South Carolina.

We are especially proud of their individual accomplishments that they credit in part to the strength of the SJMC faculty and the excellent instruction they received in each sequence--advertising and public relations, electronic and print journalism, and visual communications.

For example, Adam Beam and Justin Chappell praise the instruction they received from their magazine article writing class with Professor Ernie Wiggins. Jessica Boulware cites her design classes with Professors Farrand, Kenney and Kornegay. Erin Colgan and Karen Zatkulak both laud the broadcast senior semester experience as their most beneficial class. Erin Nelson points to the significance of her 2004 Bateman team experience. Danielle Washington found the advertising campaigns class more than a capstone experience but also a great career launch.

I salute each of the winners who serve as role models for current and future students, and embody one of the School's proudest traditions--producing and placing outstanding graduates in the journalism and mass communication field or graduate and professional schools."

In addition, the School of Journalism recognized the academic achievements of those students inducted into national academic and honorary societies, the Kappa Tau Alpha top scholar award recipients, student awards from professional associations, seniors graduating with honors and scholarship recipients for the 2005-2006 academic year.
