SJMC recognizes distinguished alumni

Three alumni of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications shared highlights of their professional experiences as they were honored at the 2004 “Distinguished Alumni ” dinner held at the Summit Club in downtown Columbia in November.

Two of the alumni, Bill Douglas and Robin Roberts, earned their recognition as “distinguished alumni” by looking at politics from rather different perspectives. Douglas, a 1980 journalism graduate, is a Knight Ridder White House correspondent who covered the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign. Read bio>>

Roberts, a 1976 ad/pr grad, is president of National Media Inc., which handled all advertising media planning and buying for the Bush-Cheney campaigns of 2000 and 2004. Read bio>>

Research by Roberts’ company shaped the Republican ad campaign by discerning the differences between Republican and Democratic viewers. Democrats like Court TV; Republicans watch the Golf Channel. Democrats watch David Letterman; Republicans prefer Jay Leno. But only those who stay up late. Republicans turn the TV off earlier than Democrats.

Douglas invited President Clinton to a soul food dinner at his home. The President accepted, charmed the neighbors, ate heartily and lingered. But it’s a story only Bill can tell.

Distinguished Alumni are recognized after more than 10 years work in their professions.

The Outstanding Young Alumnus award noted achievements in the first ten years of a career.

Jason Wagenheim, a 1995 public relations graduate, is director of advertising for Conde Nast Traveler magazine in New York. Wagenheim recounted the value of his USC experience as editor of The Gamecock and a founder of the Garnet & Black. He said students should not pass up such opportunities. Read bio>>

The honored graduates also visited classes in the Coliseum.
