J-School
students share their experiences
The School of Journalism
and Mass Communications values professional internships as essential
to the total academic experience. J-School students have served
in internships with some of the most prestigious agencies, stations
and newspapers in the country such as CNN, ESPN, The Washington
Post, Erwin-Penland and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Three students share details
from their exciting internships this summer and describe how the
School prepared them for their experiences.

On my first
tour of the bureau, I was literally dumped off the line and into
the middle of “Special Report’s” morning roundtable
meeting. It was well under way, so my entrance was especially
noticed. I introduced myself to the 12-member staff, including
Hume. "Where are you from, boy?" he asked in his booming,
authoritative voice.

In the
corporate offices I learned about Morris’ insurance plan,
and why the company is changing its 401(k). In Jacksonville,
Fla., I discussed the threat Craigslist poses to classified ad
sales, and in Savannah, Ga., I saw a new breed of gatekeeper
in action - a group of female editors holding a budget meeting
in the middle of the newsroom, outfitted with an interactive
screen several feet square.

I was thrilled
when I was one of two interns offered the six-month internship.
I would stay at the Olympic Training Center, eat in the dining
hall and work out in the weight room. What other internship allows
you to live, eat and hang out with Olympic athletes daily?
