Professor Drewniany Wins Top Honor at ADDY Awards
The American Advertising Federation of the Midlands honored professor Bonnie Drewniany with the AAF Silver Medal Award at the annual ADDY Awards held at the Township Auditorium on Feb. 23. The silver medal is the highest honor an AAF chapter can bestow. Recipients are selected based on three criteria: professional success, creative ability, contributions to the general advancement of advertising and contributions to the community. Professor Campbell Recognized by Columbia Urban League
Journalism professor Dr. Ken Campbell was recognized by the Columbia Urban League last month for his almost 20 years as editor of The State of Black South Carolina, the Urban League's annual publication.
Professor Wei Takes First Place Twice
Public relations professor Dr. Ran Wei had two papers take first place at the Broadcast Education Association 53rd Convention in Las Vegas. His paper, "Effects of message sensation value in bird flu TV news stories on audience arousal and perception of story quality" placed first in the Research Division. His paper, "Profiling user responses to mobile TV : Effects on individual differences, mobility and technology cluster on critical mass" placed first in the Communication Technology Division. Professor Wei is on sabbatical leave this year as a senior fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
Professor Kornegay Serves Up Dinner Dialogues
Visual communications professor Van Kornegay connects with students through a university program called Dinner Dialogues. Carolina professors in every discipline—from chemistry to music—provide food and food for thought in their homes, under the program sponsored by Carolina's Office of Parents Programs. Read More
Professor Roberts Moving to University of Alabama
Journalism professor Dr. Chris Roberts will become an assistant professor of journalism in Fall 2008 at the University of Alabama, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. He joined USC's faculty in 2006 after more than seven years as an editor at The State newspaper.
Professor Bender Argued Two Cases in the Supreme Court
Reid H. Montgomery Freedom of Information Chair Jay Bender has argued two access to public records cases in the Supreme Court of South Carolina this semester. In January Bender argued that Anderson County Council member Cindy Wilson was entitled to access to county financial records over the objection of the county administrator, and on March 5 Bender argued that Horry County could not claim a copyright in public records to limit public access to and use of public records. The court generally announces a decision within two month of argument.

Gold and Silver ADDY Awards
The American Advertising Federation of the Midlands honored seven J-School students with ADDY awards at its annual awards ceremony, including two Gold winners. Read more

Harry Logan, '70 BA, Elected President of the S.C. Press Association
Logan, editor of the Morning News, has been elected president of the S.C. Press Association. He has served the association as past board member, treasurer and vice president for dailies. The press association is 156 years old and includes the state's 18 daily newspapers and more than 70 of its weekly newspapers.
Molly Myers, '01 MLIS, Promoted to Lead Librarian
Myers is now lead librarian for the Old Worthington Libraries Youth Services. Worthington Libraries is the Library Journal Library of the Year.
Denise Lyons, '04 MLIS, Promoted to Communications Coordinator
Lyons is now communications coordinator for the City of Dallas. This position supports the programming, marketing, communications and PR efforts of the Dallas Public Library and their partners through the Dallas Arts Learning Initiative.
Jason Darby, '05 MMC, Named Director of Public Relations
Darby has been named director of public relations of Claflin University. Claflin is embarking on a new Communications and Marketing initiative to promote the University to a global audience and position the University as a national resource of information and answers on education and research issues.
Kathy Ferrell-Bargeloh, '95 MLIS, Helps Publish a Book
Ferrell-Bargeloh worked with the children at Franklin Elementary Center to publish The Cat Has Class. The children wrote and illustrated the book. This book has been picked up by book jobbers Ingram and Follett for distribution. A copy will be placed in our South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy.
