"Cocky. Can you read?" Michelle Obama asks. Can he ever! Cocky may not talk, but he's our finest, featheriest emissary for the School of Library and Information Science's literacy initiative.

The New Yorker's March 10 issue describes Michelle Obama's encounter with Cocky and her visit to the USC Child Development and Research Center to lead off a lengthy profile of the woman who could become the country's First Lady. The coolest aspect was that the Obama campaign had heard about Cocky's Reading Express and asked us if Mrs. Obama could participate in a reading session.

When it comes to literacy, we're non-partisan. We welcome anyone who wants to join in this essential quest to give young children the tools and the chance to succeed. Literacy specialists will tell you that children have to be captured and captivated by reading before they leave third grade.

Our search for the first holder of the Augusta Baker Chair in Childhood Literacy is also moving forward. We expect to have candidates for the chair on campus this spring. The Augusta Baker Chair and Cocky's Reading Express go hand-in-hand (hand-in-wing?) as key elements of our literacy initiative.

All of this produces the same kind of excitement that Michelle Obama recognized when she visited. As The New Yorker reported:

"Boom! Boom! Boom!" she read to a group of preschoolers. "The bear will tromp through the forest on his big hungry feet and"—sniff, sniff, sniff—"find that strawberry, no matter where it's hidden."

The kids burst into giggles.

We're non-partisan when it comes to giggles.
