Dear Friends of the College of Mass Communications and Information
Studies:
Days at the J and L Schools are never slow, especially during
fall semester!
We want to share with you some of our latest happenings and
encourage you
to be a part of our upcoming activities.
- University President Andrew Sorensen,
Library School Director Dan Barron
and Dean Bierbauer announced the School of Library and
Information Science's
statewide, multipart, $6 million "Children,
Libraries and Literacy"
initiative at news conferences in Spartanburg, Columbia
and Charleston on
September 29. This is the culmination and combination of
the Library
School's effort to create the Augusta
Baker Chair in Childhood Literacy,
expand the BEST Center into the South Carolina Center for
Children's Books
and Literacy and reach out to deliver programs to libraries
and communities
across the state.
- The Journalism School had its second and third
alumni receptions this
month "“ in New York on September 14 at
the Time and Life Building and in
Atlanta on September 27 at the home of Kathleen and Jeff
Haidet. Kathleen's
a 1983 journalism grad. These are great events for reconnecting
with our
alumni, sharing plans for launching our College Alumni
Society and
relocating the College and Journalism School to the LeConte
building in 2009.
- Don't miss Washington Post
columnist, two-time Pulitzer Prize honoree and
distinguished alumnus of the J-School, Jim Hoagland, who
will be the
featured speaker at the J-School's Second
Annual Buchheit Family Lecture
scheduled for Wednesday, October 5, 7 p.m. at USC's
Law School Auditorium.

- All aboard for a Game Day gathering at Cockaboose
#14 Saturday, October 8,
2005. Library and Journalism School alumni are invited
to join us anytime
during the two hours prior to the 1 pm kickoff of the
Carolina "“ Kentucky
football game.
- Don't forget about the launch
of our own College Alumni Society and the
two kickoff events planned for October 21 and 22. Please

and the SCETV Tailgate on Saturday. Please visit

complete the Alumni Society Survey. Everyone who completes

- The drive to create an endowed scholarship
to honor the late Dr. Jon
Wardrip, is halfway toward its goal. If you would like
to contribute, please
contact Elaine Taylor at etaylor@sc.edu. We hope
to have the scholarship
endowed by the end of this year. Also, if you would like
to make a tribute
to Jon and his role as an advertising professor, please
visit his memorial
pages.
