Graduation day beckons for more than 250 of our students
this Friday at the Colonial Center. Before the new grads
move on to their next adventures, join us in celebrating
our students' accomplishments and other College events.
• Four students from the Journalism School's Public Relations
track proved to the world they "Can Do It" recently
by taking USC to the winner's circle for the third time
in five years, earning first place in the national Public
Relations Student Society of America's Bateman Competition.
The first place team members were Betsy Heckert, Melissa
Hensley, Anna Fox and Ashley Moore. Two other teams from
USC also distinguished themselves in this year's competition,
one earning an honorable mention and the other, a shot
at an additional first place title in June. Read

• Twelve students from the Journalism School's Ad Team
placed second in regional competition, two points behind
the University of Virginia. The client was Postal Vault.
Teams from seven major universities presented their advertising
campaigns to a panel of professional judges. Read more>>
• The USC Board of Trustees gave its approval on April
20, 2006, to the Library School's proposal for an undergraduate
degree in information studies. The next step will take
the proposal to the Commission on Higher Education. This
keeps the Library School on track for final approval
in the fall.
• The Journalism School held its annual Honors and Awards
night on April 20, 2006, recognizing scores of students'
accomplishments in scholarship and leadership. The School
also awarded the first Taylor-Tomlin Award for Investigative
Journalism. This award went to journalists Glenn Smith
and Ron Menchaca from The Post and Courier for their
three-day series, "Tarnished Badges", detailing
how problem cops move from town to town. The
award, named for and funded by Columbia businessmen Joe
Taylor and Don Tomlin, was given by the School in cooperation
with the South Carolina Press Association. Read

• Public relations senior Justin Williams had a big day
on April 20th. At our awards ceremony, the former student
government president was named the outstanding public
relations student. Earlier in the day, he received the
University's highest award, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan
award, recognizing the breadth of his contributions to
the University. More

• Both the Journalism and Library Schools will have graduation
receptions for their May graduates on Friday, May 5,
2006, immediately following the 3pm commencement. The
J-School's reception will be hosted by the College's
Alumni Society and will take place in the Frank McGuire
Room, located inside the Athletic Practice Facility. The
L-School's reception will be hosted by the College's Alumni
Society and the Library and Information Science Student Association
and will take place in Davis College. Please RSVP for
either reception to etaylor@sc.edu.
