E-ALERT - May 3, 2006

Dear Friends of the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies

Graduation day beckons for more than 250 of our students this Friday at the Colonial Center. Before the new grads move on to their next adventures, join us in celebrating our students' accomplishments and other College events.

• Four students from the Journalism School's Public Relations track proved to the world they "Can Do It" recently by taking USC to the winner's circle for the third time in five years, earning first place in the national Public Relations Student Society of America's Bateman Competition. The first place team members were Betsy Heckert, Melissa Hensley, Anna Fox and Ashley Moore. • The Journalism School held its annual Honors and Awards night on April 20, 2006, recognizing scores of students' accomplishments in scholarship and leadership. The School also awarded the first Taylor-Tomlin Award for Investigative Journalism. This award went to journalists Glenn Smith and Ron Menchaca from The Post and Courier for their three-day series, "Tarnished Badges", detailing how problem cops move from town to town. The award, named for and funded by Columbia businessmen Joe Taylor and Don Tomlin, was given by the School in cooperation with the South Carolina Press Association. Read more>>

Earlier in the day, he received the University's highest award, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award, recognizing the breadth of his contributions to the University. More details>>
