E-ALERT
- April 3, 2006
Dear Friends of the College of Mass Communications and Information
Studies:
Don’t be fooled – the College of Mass Communications
and Information Studies is ready for the month of April.
We’re excited about what’s happening in the College
and we hope you are too.
• The U.S.News & World Report’s annual “America’s
Best Graduate Schools” rankings were announced Friday,
March 31, 2006, and the School of Library and Information
Science has much to be proud of. Two of the School’s
programs earned high rankings - school library media and
health librarianship captured the No.2 and No.8 spots in
their respective ratings categories.
• Dr. Samantha Kelly Hastings will join the School
of Library and Information Science as director in August.
Dr. Hastings, currently associate professor in the School
of Library and Information Sciences at the University of
North Texas, will succeed Dr. Daniel Barron who is retiring
at the end of July. Hastings’ previous work has concentrated
on the value of libraries and museums as cultural institutions.
She served as interim dean at North Texas, was a consultant
to the Bureau of Library Development for the state of Florida,
and has been both a teacher and medical librarian in Tucson,
Arizona. She was president of the American Society of Information
Science and Technology (ASIS&T). Dr. Hastings received
her Ph.D. from Florida State University. Please join me in
welcoming her!
• On Tuesday, March 28, 2006, Jefferson-Pilot presented
a $5000 check to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications
for the broadcasting program.
• Our College’s third annual I-Comm Week starts
today and we hope you’re planning to join us for some
of the scheduled events. I-Comm Week is our opportunity to
shine a spotlight on each of the disciplines of the Journalism
and Library Schools with speakers, workshops and events for
students, alumni and friends. The theme this year is “Inspiring
a New Generation.” Visit www.sc.edu/cmcis to see the
complete calendar of events.
More info about more things, as always, on www.sc.edu/cmcis.
If you have an address, phone, email or job change, send
those to Elaine Taylor at etaylor@sc.edu.
Sincerely,
Charles Bierbauer
