SCHOLARSHIPS
FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN
Following is a list of scholarships
for which students who have been accepted into the School
of Journalism and Mass
Communications may be eligible to apply. This list does not
include scholarships awarded by the University. Applications
require free Acrobat
Reader.
SJMC Freshmen Scholarships
Each year the School of Journalism and Mass Communications
awards approximately $10,000 in varying increments to incoming
freshmen. Among the criteria considered for these awards
are SAT scores, high school GPA and extra-curricular activities.

School of Journalism and Mass Communications Alumni Freshmen
Scholarships
Children of alumni of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications
entering the School as freshmen are eligible to apply for
the one-time Alumni Scholarship. Among the criteria considered
for this award are SAT scores, high school GPA and extra-curricular
activities.

Cable TV Scholarship
The South Carolina Cable Television Association awards a
$10,000 scholarship ($2,500 per year for four years) to
an outstanding student entering the USC School of Journalism
and Mass Communications. To be eligible, the student must
be a South Carolina resident who is planning a career in journalism/mass communications,
is actively involved in journalism or broadcasting as part of their extra-curricular
activities and has a good academic record.

Charleston Post and Courier Minority Newspaper Scholarship
The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, S.C., offers
a $6,000 scholarship to a South Carolina high school minority
student planning a career in newspapers. In addition, the
student must enroll in the newspaper track of the Print and
Electronic Sequence of USC’s School of Journalism and
Mass Communications. The scholarship is renewable until graduation
for students who maintain a B average and show evidence of
professional growth. Recipients may be offered paid internships
at The Post and Courier. After graduation, recipients will
be expected to accept a salaried position in the newsroom
of the Charleston Post and Courier, if offered.

McClatchy Minority Scholarship and Fellowship
This scholarship is awarded to minority freshmen, continuing
students, and graduate students pursuing print journalism
careers in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Scholarships and fellowships will be awarded based on need
and merit as determined by the School of Journalism. To be
eligible for this award, freshmen must be accepted to the
School of Journalism and Mass Communications. This is a one-year,
non-renewable scholarship.

South Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA) Scholarship
One high school senior pursuing a newspaper career will receive
a $500 scholarship to attend a college-level journalism program
in South Carolina. To be eligible, the applicant’s
publication must be a member of the SCSPA. Scholarship will
be awarded at the 2008 Spring Conference. To apply: Check

South Carolina Press Association Scholarships
One outstanding high school senior journalist in the state
receives this monetary one-year award (approximately $1,000)
from SCSPA. The recipient’s publications must hold
membership in SCSPA and applicants must enroll in the School
of Journalism and Mass Communications at USC. Scholarship
will be awarded at the 2008 Spring Conference. To apply:

J. Grady Locklear Scholarship
The J. Grady Locklear Scholarship may be awarded at each SIPA
Convention to a senior who meets the following criteria:
the student must plan to major in Journalism at the University
of South Carolina, be a writer or staff member on a literary
magazine, must attend the 2008 SIPA Convention, and the recipient’s
magazine must hold membership in SIPA. To apply: Check with

Feb. 1, 2008.
Col. C. E. (Chuck) Savedge Memorial Scholarship
Col. C. E. (Chuck) Savedge was an important figure in scholastic
journalism and deeply involved with SIPA. This scholarship
will be awarded to an outstanding high school senior based
on this criteria: the student must be a staff member on a
yearbook, must attend the USC School of Journalism and Mass
Communications, must attend the 2008 SIPA Convention, and
the recipient’s yearbook must hold membership in SIPA.

Sylvia Daughtry and Betty Morton Future Teacher Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded at the 2008 SIPA convention
to a student planning to enroll in the School of Journalism
and Mass Communications to prepare to become a classroom
teacher. The recipient must also be a staff member of a
publication holding membership in SIPA and must attend
the 2008 SIPA Convention in Columbia. To apply: Check with

Feb. 1, 2008.
Southern Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA) Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded during the convention to an outstanding
SIPA student. The following criteria must be met by each
applicant: The student must be on a publication or broadcasting
staff which is a member of SIPA, must have a good academic
record, must attend the USC School of Journalism and Mass
Communications and plan a career in journalism/mass communications,
and must attend the 2008 SIPA Convention. To apply: Check
