OF MASS COMMUNICATION
NEWSPAPER LEADERSHIP
The Newspaper Leadership area of emphasis
is designed for applicants with prior newspaper experience
who desire to achieve managerial or ownership positions.
Applicants for this area of emphasis normally demonstrate
the equivalent of five years of experience in newspaper journalism
or newspaper management.
To earn the M.M.C. degree with the Newspaper Leadership
area of emphasis, a student must complete a minimum of 12
graduate
courses (36 credits) including the following:
1. The M.M.C. core:
- JOUR 701 – Research Methods in Mass
Communication
- JOUR 705 – Integrated Communication Principles
- JOUR 706 – Media Law
- JOUR 762 – Issues in Mass Communication
Management
- JOUR 771 – Media Economics
- JOUR 777 – Practicum in Mass Communication
Management
Students choosing this area of emphasis will be expected
to work with a daily or
weekly newspaper, magazine or online journalism-oriented organization
to fulfill
their professional capstone practicum experience.
2. Three graduate courses (nine credits) of directed
electives:
- MKTG 701 – Marketing Management
- MGMT 718 – Management of Human Resources
- MGMT 770 – Organization Behavior or JOUR
710 – Organizational Communication
3. Three graduate elective courses (nine credits) that
can be chosen from:
- JOUR 551 – Newspaper Management
- JOUR 563/JOUR 790 – Topics in Journalism
and Mass Communication (course that
deals with current industry issues and varies from semester
to semester)
- JOUR 501 – Freedom, Responsibility, and
Ethics of the Mass Media
- JOUR 528 – Editorial and Opinion Writing
- JOUR 529 – Informational Graphics for
the Mass Media
- JOUR 541 – International Mass Communications
- JOUR 542 – Public Opinion and Propaganda
- JOUR 552 – Cable/Satellite Communication
- JOUR 564 – Graphic Design
- •JOUR 704 – Editorial Interpretation, Policy
and Management
- JOUR 707 – Contemporary Issues in Mass
Communication
- JOUR 711 – Applied Mass Communication
Research
- JOUR 720 – History of Mass Media

student’s
Academic Advisor and
the Associate Director for Graduate
Studies and Research.
4. The M.M.C. comprehensive examination consisting of:
- a five-hour written examination based on the
M.M.C. core
- a second-day written examination based on the
elective hours and practicum-related
experience
- an oral defense of the second-day written examination.
