HOW
TO APPLY
The most convenient and secure way to apply for admission
to a degree program is to complete the Graduate
School's online application on the World Wide Web. Click
here for the online
application>>
Paper application packets may be obtained from The Graduate
School by calling 803-777-4243 or writing to The Graduate
School, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208.
Completed application forms and all supporting documents
must be sent to The Graduate School. An application cannot
be given final consideration until all required credentials
have been received and the $40 application fee is paid. Therefore,
applicants are advised to arrange for the transmittal of
all documents well ahead of the application deadlines specified
for respective programs.
All correspondence should include the applicant's Social
Security number. International applicants will be issued
student identification numbers by The Graduate School at
the time of application.
A complete application for the M.A., M.M.C., or Ph.D. degree
program should include:
- online application

online application for M.A. or M.M.C.)
- Doctoral Studies Supplemental Information and Statement
of Intent for Ph.D. applicants (available as a link from
the online application)
- official Graduate Record Examination scores (general
test only – no subject test required)
- three letters of recommendation (some of which should

as a link from the online application)
Applicants should explain their rationale for seeking the
traditional master of arts degree (M.A.), professional
master’s degree in mass communication (M.M.C.) or the
doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.). Non-English speaking international
students must also submit scores of 600 or above on the Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Applicants to these programs must demonstrate competency
in statistical reasoning. If an applicant has not successfully
completed an undergraduate course in descriptive or inferential
statistics, he or she must successfully complete this area
in the School’s Camp Carolina program
or enroll in a statistics course (undergraduate or graduate)
during your first or second semester of graduate coursework.
Once complete, an application is reviewed by the School’s
Admissions Committee, and their recommendation is made to
The Graduate School. Formal notification of this recommendation
is sent to the student by The Graduate School.
