DOCTORAL
ADMISSIONS
An applicant for admission to the Ph.D. degree program will
be evaluated on a combination of factors:
- academic record, especially work done at the master’s
level
- performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
- professional experience
- three letters of recommendations
- personal statement outlining reasons for applying for
doctoral study and career hopes and expectations
Successful applicants usually present:
- undergraduate
and graduate grade point averages of at least 3.0
- a combined verbal/quantitative GRE score of 1,200 and
a score of 5.0 or better on the analytical writing
is expected, though exceptions have been made for applicants
with unusually strong professional backgrounds or other
evidence of outstanding professional and intellectual
promise
- a score of at least 600 on the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) for non-English speaking international
applicants
- at least one year,
often much more, of experience as journalism/mass communication
professionals
Doctoral students must have completed, or be in the final
stages of, a master's degree. The master's need not be in
journalism/mass communication, though a student whose master's
is in another field may need additional coursework or equivalent
credit before being admitted to doctoral candidacy, as determined
by the faculty after evaluating the student's Qualifying
Examination (see core).
Potential applicants who have questions about their qualifications
for admission are encouraged to contact the Associate
Director for Graduate Studies and Research.
