| DIRECTOR'S
WELCOME
Welcome to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications
at the University of South Carolina.
The School recently
merged with the School of Library and Information Sciences
to form the new College
of Mass Communications and Information Studies.
We are proud of our tradition of excellence in undergraduate
and graduate instruction. At the undergraduate level, the
curriculum emphasizes a strong liberal arts education, mastery
of professional skills in journalism and mass communication
fields, and an appreciation for First Amendment principles
that inform the media’s role in society. Students may
pursue undergraduate majors in print and electronic journalism,
advertising, public relations and visual communications.
At the graduate level, we offer the Master of Arts in Journalism,
the Master of Mass Communication (MMC), and the Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) in Mass Communications. SJMC is accredited
by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and
Mass Communications.
Undergraduate and graduate instruction in the School is
enhanced by the merger with SLIS and our affiliation with
Newsplex, the College’s new convergent laboratory that
has emerged as a teaching tool in the new communication technologies,
a convener of nationally recognized convergent media scholars,
and a training facility for mass communication professionals.
We offer other exciting opportunities for students to hone
professional skills in professional student organizations
such as the Ad Club, award-winning Bateman Team, PRSSA; through
internships; student run media such as the Gamecock and WUSC
outside the School, and products of the School’s capstone
course for senior electronic and print journalism students,
Carolina News and the Carolina Reporter.
Our world-class faculty members are leaders in their respective
fields and have received awards recognizing their contributions
to teaching, research and creative activities, and public
service. They are gaining regional and national prominence
for research initiatives in nanotechnology, public health,
government and the private sector.
Our outreach and other service activities are enhanced
by our office of Continuing Education that provides training
to industry professionals, the South
Carolina Scholastic Press Association and the Southern
Interscholastic Press Association that provides a strong
link to high schools in South Carolina and the Southeast.
Please browse our Web pages and discover why we believe
this is one of the most exciting times and places to be involved
in journalism and mass communication education.
